More from Ruth Kastberg More from Ruth Kastberg Image Love in Action We had been going through some trying times, and this Sunday afternoon I was feeling somewhat discouraged. Our financial situation was not a pretty picture. And still, God has always been faithful, always come through; so why should I be downhearted? We wanted to put the house up for sale and there were so many things that needed to be done. Gutters needed fixing, walls and ceilings needing painting, the yard needed some serious work, and the list could go on and on. That's when the phone rang and a cheerful lady said, "We're having our small-group-meeting right now and we were wondering if you would like some help getting the house fixed up. We heard you were going to put it up for sale." I told her that would be wonderful. On a Saturday morning a few weeks later, 18-19 people of all ages were at our house ready to roll up their sleeves and work. And that they did! Our neighbors looked from a distance with amazement, wondering who all these people were. I personally felt an overwhelming feeling of thankfulness and was totally blown away by the generosity. The pastor, his wife, and several of the kids planted pretty pansies. Paul and his team trimmed the bushes and yard. Rose, Shirley, Josh, and so many others painted the garage door and front porch (along with some people's hair and necks!). Marvin and his gang fixed the gutter. The ceiling and walls were patched by Pete's handy-work. Pastor Harold even climbed up on the roof and gave the window-frames a touch-up. Believe me, the list is much longer than this. When 2:00 PM came around, the house had experienced a major lift; and so had my spirit. It was much more than the windows that Leon worked on, or the pansies, or the gutter - it was the love that we had experienced. Unsolicited and unselfish action expressed soul-touching love. We felt embraced by our church family, knit together by love and care. I can't express how much those six hours impacted me because words sometimes are not enough to convey feelings. I just know that we didn't feel alone in our struggle. God had sent loving people our way to show us that He was still in control and cared about our trivial burdens. Maybe there's a single mom or an elderly person in your congregation who could use encouragement. A helping hand talks so much louder than words sometimes. There are a lot of people, one may be sitting on the same bench as you on Sunday morning, who desperately need to see someone cares beyond a "Hi" and "Bye." As I thanked the wonderful team who blessed us so, I heard back, "it was so much fun, it did so much for our little group to do something like this together." That shows that as they gave, God blessed back, so we all got a share of His touch that day. ...by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" Acts 20:35 Close Acts 20:35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: `It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" OPEN VERSE IN BIBLE (nlt) (NIV) Copyright © Ruth Kastberg, used with permission.

Image Are the Bumper Stickers True? Living in a metropolitan area, traffic is a major issue. Sometimes you feel like you are in the middle of a jungle of cars. On my daily commute, I always enjoy reading bumper stickers on the cars around me. There are plenty of them, and they make the journey seem shorter. It never ceases to amaze me how many have a Christian message on them:  "Jesus Christ — Don't leave earth without Him" "The Big Bang Theory: God spoke, and BANG, it happened" "Jesus Loves You" "God Is Love;" ... and the list goes on. Seeing so many cars with these great messages, I ask myself, "If there are so many of us who believe, why doesn't our society look different? Has the salvation experience in my life impacted the way I live in such a way that it is noticeable to those around me? Can they see a difference in me? Are my actions creating a hunger in them for more out of life? Or are the bumper sticker words being drowned by a lifestyle that in no way shows that God is in control?" You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:13-14, NIV). It seems to me that if each one of us, driving along with a worthwhile message, lived a worthwhile life, people would notice. Our society should be impregnated with a liberating message of true and real LIFE. Maybe my passion is not where it needs to be. Maybe Jesus is not the center of my life as I claim. Maybe my selfish desires control my actions, and God is just a side instead of the main ingredient. If so, I have some major rearranging to do in me. I need to let Jesus sit on the throne; I need to make Him my pilot, not my co-pilot. For years, I have avoided putting bumper stickers on my car. I guess I just did not want to be a stumbling block to those around me if I (or whoever was driving my car) didn't live up to a behavior honoring God. But maybe what I need to do is change the driver's attitude. Make myself accountable to God and those around me for my actions. Chatting online with a friend, I said, "We should get together to do something fun—play a game, sing, or whatever. We haven't done that in a long time." She jokingly responded, "Fun? What is that? Who has time for fun anyway?" Nothing came out of it. No fun, no time. In my mind I thought, We make time for the things we really want to do. When it comes down to it, it is all a matter of priorities. In all honesty, I felt a little hurt. If we can't make time for a friend every now and then, how important is the friendship? Later in the day, the thought popped back into my mind. I said, "Lord, I need to have fun sometimes. Life is so intense with work and obligations. I need a friend who can spend time with me." That's when I heard the words as clear as day, "SO DO I." It was a very unexpected reply. Suddenly, I realized that I keep giving the Lord the same excuses for not spending quality time with Him. I'm too busy. The day flies by and it is too late to take some quiet time. In the morning, it gets too rushed too often. "Priorities, priorities—if I'm as important to you as you claim, you would want to spend time with Me a whole lot more." So there it goes. I stand corrected by my own measuring rule. I'm sorry, Lord. I must really hurt you a lot with my constant excuses. Help me to change my priorities so You will know how important You are to me. I know You don't condemn me, but I sure want to please You. Once again, in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle, the Lord took time to teach me something. Now is time for action. Join me; let us get our priorities straight. We can use the ultimate guide for priority setting: God's Word. Listen to Jesus: Look! Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends ( Revelation 3:20 Close Revelation 3:20 "Look! I stand at the door and knock. Image Pride and Provision It was Sunday morning and I was excited. Monday would be the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Our church had a one-year program called Training Bible School. When people asked me what that meant, I used to joke saying we go jogging with the Bible under our arms. Actually it was a combination of Bible school and street evangelism. I had felt God directing me to join the program, and tomorrow would be my first day. I thanked God for a new day, and I prayed that He would provide the $20 I needed to buy a one-month pass for the subway. I lived with my parents, and they provided all I needed. So right or wrong, I put a little condition in my prayer. I said, "Lord, Mom and Dad have been so good to me. Please, let the money for the pass come some other way. They have done so much for me already." I jumped out of bed and got ready for church. I forgot all about my prayer. Later that day, we went back to church for the evening service. After the meeting, people gathered talking and laughing in small circles in front of the church. I was in one of them with some of my friends when I felt someone putting something in my pocket. I turned around and saw my friend Rose-Marie walking back to her little circle. I stuck my hand in my pocket and pulled up what I thought might be a note. Instead, I pulled out a $20 bill for all around me to see. I was shocked and very embarrassed. My pride had kicked in. I walked over and pulled Rose-Marie aside. I said, "Why did you give me the money? I don't need any money!" She looked me straight in the eye and said firmly, "If God told me you need it, I know you need it. Don’t cheat me out of the blessing of doing what He wants me to do." I was quiet for a little while and a tear started rolling down my cheek. I gave her a big hug and apologized for not being truthful. I told her about my prayer that morning and her face broke into a radiant smile. "See? God is so good. He's blessing me by blessing you." What was I thinking? That the money was going to fall down from heaven? I have heard of that happening, but it is a rare thing. Most of the time He uses people like Rose-Marie, who are sensitive to His voice and willing to serve. My pride had almost robbed me of the blessing of an answered prayer. I learned something that evening. If you ask God to provide for you, you have to be willing to open your hand and receive. You have to trust He knows best and receive His provision in whatever way He chooses to bring it to you. “And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need." (Luke 12:29-31). When I paid for my subway pass Monday morning, I felt pure joy. The new chapter in my life had started with a great little miracle. I could not wait to see what was ahead of me. My church had asked me to pioneer a ministry to a special ethnic group. After prayer I knew it was God's purpose for me, and I gladly accepted. A few weeks into this, I felt pretty lonely. When you pioneer something, there is no previous framework to follow. The only mandate I had was "reach them for Christ." I didn't have anyone to work with me. I was pretty much on my own. Where do I start? What do I do? I called one of my friends-- she wasn't home. I called another one-- no answer. I called a third one-- same result. Wasn't there anyone who had time for me? I really needed to talk to somebody. I was feeling so down. That's when I opened my Bible and my eyes fell on a scripture that I had read many times before, but never with the meaning it had for me that day. When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. (Matthew 17:8 NIV) I started crying before Him. My friends where not there right then, but Jesus was. He had been there all along. I talked to Him for a long while. I told Him of my insecurities, and that I did not know what to do next. His love filled the room and peace filled my soul. After a few hours I was full of joy, peace, purpose, and the knowledge of what to do next. I woke up early the next morning. I couldn't wait to get going. With my guitar in hand I headed for the square where this group of people frequently gathered. It was in the middle of the winter, with cold and snow, but I had only one goal in my mind; to sing them into the Kingdom. So out came the guitar, and I sat down on a bench in the square and started singing in their language. It didn't take long before I could see them stand here and there listening. A few weeks later the first family received the Lord as their Savior, and many followed over the next couple of years. God is so awesome! Sometimes we get so caught up in the daily things that we forget that He is right there, even when everybody else is gone. And the greatest thing is that He has the best answer! Maybe you've been feeling alone, with no one to share your burdens. You know what? You are not alone. Jesus is right there! And He does have the answer, or the touch, or the peace, or the joy or whatever the depth of your soul is screaming for. Just talk to Him. ~ Scripture is quoted from THE HOLY BIBLE, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®, NIV® Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® Used by permission. All rights reserved worldwide.
