It may be a loss for words or a shaking of the head — one that resonates with me the most is laughter. Abraham and Sarah experienced this laughter in Genesis 17:15-19 (NKJV):
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”
Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him."
As a backstory, God had given Abraham a promise that he would be a great nation (Genesis 12:2) and that his offspring would be as the dust of the earth (Genesis 13:16). The only issue was that Abraham and Sarah were well beyond their childbearing years. As God shared this promise, Abraham fell in reverence to God and laughed in awe of this news. God then shared the impossible with Abraham that he and his wife would have a son of their own named Isaac. Abraham chose to believe the Lord, “and He accounted it to him for righteousness” (Genesis 15:6).
God demonstrated the impossible for me in 2016, during my freshman year of college at Regent University. I ran track and field and cross country all four years of high school. However, during my senior year, I faced the harsh reality that I would not be a college athlete. While the passion was there, my times were not where they needed to be, and on top of that, I would soon be attending a university with no athletic program. During my first two months of college, I ran drills and sprints around campus, reminiscing on my former days.
To my surprise, two months later, I got the message that Regent University was starting its first-ever athletics program, beginning with track and field! To this news, I laughed in wonder. My mind raced with questions. “Are you serious? Am I about to be a collegiate athlete? We don’t even own an athletic facility; where will we practice?”
During this season, I witnessed that God can make all things possible. He allowed me to not only become a collegiate athlete but to make history and leave a legacy for future athletes for years to come.
God is truly a God of the impossible. He “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” (Ephesians 3:20).
Will you put your trust in Him today for the impossible?

It was only fitting that our morning runs together were led with cadence calls. As a teen, I would rise and grab my shoes in eager anticipation of our runs. You see, our running times were something special—time exclusively reserved for him and me as we trod across the country roads. It was a daddy’s-girl dream. While I learned physical discipline, this developed over time into a spiritual discipline. I learned perseverance.
The lesson from our morning runs is one of many biblical lessons that my father has deposited into my heart. As I reflect on my dad this Father’s Day, I recall the many lessons I have learned through him. And whether he realizes it or not, he has shown me a glimpse of what my heavenly Father is like.
In my early years, I learned about the heart of God for orphans and the less fortunate as my dad cared for the children who lived next door to us and whose home was filled with drugs and chaos. Whether it was to the church, the playground, or the music store, he shepherded them alongside me as if they were his own.
On still other occasions, I learned that God is to be prioritized first as my dad would honk our car horn and tell us to come outside for church. If we could be on time for work, school, or a hair salon appointment, we could surely be on time for God.
On still other occasions, I learned that God has given us life to glorify Him and enjoy it together as my dad would wake the entire family up on a Saturday morning to go play tennis. I could go on and on.
Fathers play a fundamental role in the lives of their children. They are to protect, provide, nurture and admonish, and point us to the ultimate source of life, our heavenly Father. While not perfect, they are to be an earthly representation of who God is. If our earthly fathers have such an impact on our lives, compare this to the bursting, unconditional love that our heavenly Father has for us:
“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” Matthew 7:11 (NLT)
Consider the many gifts God has given us. He has given us breath for our bodies. He has given us His creation: the beautiful sunset, the pleasure of delicious foods, the warmth of community, and fellowship. Most wonderfully, God has given us His Son:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)
God does not stop there. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we not only have eternal life but have a rich, personal relationship with Him as Abba Father (Romans 8:15). With all the blessings our heavenly Father has given us, day by day our praises should echo what great love the Father has lavished on us! 1 John 3:1 (NIV)
This Father’s Day, let’s take time to recognize those who have taken on the role of fatherhood in our lives, whether a biological father, church father, etc. Lastly, let’s give thanks to our heavenly Father.

Amid the chaos of their time, we see how God providentially intervenes and shines the Gospel forth. Reformation Day is a day in particular that strengthens my faith. On this day, we see how God used the single act of the former monk to theologian, Martin Luther, to spark the Protestant Reformation.
Concerned with the false belief that one could “buy salvation” through the practice of selling indulgences, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther is said to have nailed his Ninety-five Theses on the castle church in Wittenberg. This act sounded the alarm on the false doctrines that had infiltrated the church and called the church to return to the truth found in God’s Word.
For me, Reformation Day is a time when I reflect on the goodness of God’s amazing grace as I remember what it felt like to live under a works-based concept of salvation. For many years, I wrestled with the question of whether I could lose my salvation and if I was good enough. To relieve my concerns, I told myself that the solution was to simply do better and confess my sins. But at the end of the day, I still felt the gripping weight of sin and guilt.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).
Although I had read this passage numerous times, I vividly recall the moment I truly understood the Gospel. This is the Good News!
It is only by God’s grace that I am saved. My works could never save me. Like those who purchased indulgences during Martin Luther’s time as a means to gain salvation, I was attempting to use good works to do the same. Romans 3:10 says there is no one righteous, not even one. Isaiah 64:6 goes even further by saying that all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. Jesus Christ is the only person who walked this earth blamelessly, lived a righteous life, and is therefore the one who stands on our behalf to justify us. Understanding how I am saved changed the trajectory of my life. No longer was I under the weight of the law but free in Jesus Christ!
As Christians, it is vital that we hold true to the doctrine of salvation and demolish any lie or man-made tradition that does not align with it. The Gospel is the power of salvation to all who believe (see Romans 1:16). Martin Luther knew that if one believes salvation is obtained by any other means than by grace through faith, then they don’t have the Gospel. They have another religion. So much so, that even in the face of persecution, he would not recant.
As we observe Reformation Day, let us reflect on the words of Martin Luther when asked to recant his beliefs at the Diet of Worms:
My conscience is a prisoner of God’s Word. I cannot and will not recant, for to disobey one’s conscience is neither just nor safe. God help me. Amen.
My prayer for us today is that we will echo the same.

It was the day I did a “big chop” and committed to wearing my hair in its natural, afro state.
To those who are unfamiliar with the term “big chop,” it’s used predominantly in the black community to refer to the act of cutting off one’s chemically relaxed hair in order to revert back to their natural hair texture. A relaxer (or perm) is a chemical treatment that is applied to curly hair to make it straight. In a nutshell, a big chop is a commitment to wearing one’s naturally curly hair instead of choosing to chemically straighten it. Perms can come with a few major side effects, including extreme burning and scalp irritation upon application of the perm, scabs on the scalp, and, over time, hair loss. You may be wondering, why in the world would anyone get a perm with all those adverse side effects? One word: acceptance.
As a child, the term “good hair” only represented one thing for me: straight, long hair… a European standard of beauty. Based on those qualifications, I did not make the cut. From passive remarks to outright insults of my hair and other kinkier hair textures of African descent, it was evident what was deemed acceptable and desirable for my hair was driven by society. I felt trapped. Thankfully, God’s life-giving Word provided a way out.
You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you. (Song of Solomon 4:7 ESV)
God’s Word outweighs every fleeting beauty standard of this world that strips image-bearers of their true worth. Numbers 23:19 is the Scripture that silenced any lingering doubts about God’s view of me:
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
If God cannot lie, then He cannot lie about me; if He does not change His mind, then His declaration about me is definite. The decision to wear my natural hair is an outward expression that I believe what God says I am: beautiful.
While my testimony is about falling in love with my hair, my story is not unique. Every day, fellow image-bearers of God are made to feel “less-than” due to societal standards. Whether it be weight, height, accent, skin tone, etc. the world is constantly spreading the message that what God has declared “good” (see Genesis 1:26-31) is not good enough. If you are struggling with acceptance, know that you are fully known and loved by God. There is nothing you must alter to gain His acceptance. You are God’s masterpiece.
Lord, I pray that You will renew our minds daily from the lies of the enemy that tell us we are not enough. In times of insecurity help us remember that You’ve declared us fearfully and wonderfully made. Let us speak life to those in our proximity to those who may feel low. Let us radiate the confidence and freedom that only comes from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
